Volunteer Position Description
What:
The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond has two lifelong learning programs that provide lunch speakers:
Open University and Lunch & Life.
Open University charges a modest tuition while Lunch & Life is free and open to the public.
When and Where:
Open University meets on Mondays at St. Luke Lutheran Church at 7757 Chippenham Parkway and on Thursdays at Lakeside United Methodist Church at 2333 Hilliard Road. There are 3, 8-week sessions offered in the fall, winter, and spring.
Lunch & Life meets on Wednesdays at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 9505 Gayton Road. There are 3, 4-week sessions offered in the fall, winter, and spring.
Please note that while we work in partnership with these churches for presentation space, we are not affiliated with any church or religious organization.
What is The Shepherd’s Center?
The Center is a nonprofit organization for older adults who wish to stay active, independent, and engaged. In addition to our lifelong learning programs, we offer volunteer services such as transportation to doctor appointments and grocery stores for seniors 60 and older.
Who is our lunch speaker audience?
Older adults – generally of retirement age – who wish to remain active and engaged.
Estimated in-person attendance for lunch talks is 15-30 people with an additional 15-20 people online via Zoom.
Time:
Lunch is from 12:00 – 12:30. Participants bring a sandwich. Light snacks and beverages are provided.
The lunch speaker is from 12:30 – 1:30, which includes a 10 minute Q&A period.
Responsibilities:
Present a 50 minute talk on the topic of your choice.
Allow for a 10 minute Q&A period following your presentation.
Provide the Lifelong Learning Coordinator with:
your contact information,
the title of your lunch talk,
a one-line credential to be published with the title of your lunch talk,
a short bio for the Lifelong Learning coordinator to use for your introduction.
Qualifications:
Experience with group speaking,
Comfort with being on Zoom,
Knowledge of basic computer technology (IT equipment and assistance is provided on-site),
Ability to bring your presentation on a flash drive if applicable,
Experience interacting with older adults and diverse populations,
Possess patience and courtesy under all circumstances,
Understand and support The Shepherd’s Center mission and programs.
Reports to:
Lifelong Learning Coordinator and/or Education Committee Chair
Orientation:
Prior to your presentation, you will be given a clear understanding of the procedures as well as ongoing support. The Lifelong Learning Coordinator, Education Committee chair, and the Center’s staff, are always available for questions and assistance.
