Happy National Volunteer Week!

There are lots of national celebrations. Some are rather silly (National Bobblehead Day), some are quite significant (Martin Luther King Day), and some are, well, meh (National Laundry Day? Really?). But our most very favorite celebration is National Volunteer Week (April 21 – 27). That’s right – it’s so special it gets a whole week.

Actually it’s YOU – the volunteer – who is so special. The time you give to The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond, the gifts you share, the enthusiasm, care, guidance, love, and support…all of it is an invaluable contribution. Our volunteers are truly priceless and we deeply appreciate you!

The Shepherd’s Center would not exist without its volunteers anymore than a human body could exist without its heart. So please take a moment to appreciate all that you give to the Center. Take lots of moments – the whole week is about you – and know that we are endlessly grateful for you – the volunteer.

Now if this has all gotten a bit serious, (because speaking from the heart will do that), then proceed to the nearest store and acquire a bobblehead. It’s way better than doing the laundry.

Shepherd’s Center of America visits Richmond

We had a wonderful visit last week from Sarah Cheney, Executive Director of Shepherd’s Center of America.

Julie and SarahSarah was in Northern Virginia at a ribbon cutting for the newest Shepherd’s Center, Western Fairfax County, one of the now seven Centers in Virginia.  The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond was the first, 31 years ago, and we mentored both the Chesterfield and Oakton-Vienna Shepherd’s Center when they first began.  It’s great to be a part of such an important national organization and a caring community of people meeting the growing needs of aging Americans 60+.  Click this SCA to find out more about Shepherd’s Center of America.

Ruth Blevins Celebrates Her 100th Birthday!

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone as warm, delightful, or funny as Ruth Blevins.  Ruth has been an Open University student for far longer than I’ve been at the Shepherd’s Center, and that’s almost a decade.  Ruth has also enjoyed traveling with the Center.  A few years ago, Ruth was concerned that she would no longer be able to drive to the OU, but her daughter stepped in and began bringing her mother.

Ruth won’t let a few extra years stop her from enjoying the Open University and her friends there.  In fact, she just celebrated her 100th birthday!

Rosie Whitehorne and Carol Harris arranged a surprise for Ruth at the First Presbyterian OU.  There was a cake, balloons, and a bouquet of flowers.  When Ruth got out of the elevator, there was a gathering of well-wishers who sang happy birthday to her as she saw the cake.

Happy birthday, Ruth!
