National Volunteer Week – Monday

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss

Today, Monday, April 17, marks the start of National Volunteer Week. Which means if you volunteer for The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR), you’re about to get a whole week of appreciation!

What would TSCOR be without its volunteers? Imagine no Open University or Lunch & Life programs (thank you volunteer teachers, lunch speakers, front desk and hospitality attendees, tech aides, Zoom TA’s, and members of the education committee). Know that every single client we serve would have difficulty finding rides to their doctor’s appointments or getting groceries (thank you volunteer drivers and members of the client services committee). There would be no men’s groups or women’s groups gathering for support and networking; no travelers traveling, no friendly callers calling, no handypersons fixing. No speakers bureau, no public relations, no diversity and inclusion; no development or investment or finance committees. No Board of Directors, too? No, none of them either. So what would TSCOR be without its volunteers? A whole lot of nothing – a nonprofit to fear.

But thanks to our volunteers – people who care a whole awful lot – we are something, we’re TSCOR! We’re getting better! We’re not going to stop!

TSCOR on Giving Thanks and Finding Joy

“Joy is a choice.” That’s a surprising idea. If we make the food, buy the gifts and deck the halls, joy just shows up, doesn’t it? That may be true for some, but not for everyone.

People find joy in different ways. Something that makes The Shepherd Center of Richmond so unique is that we make joy a year-round choice. TSCOR volunteers already know the benefit of this and they put it into action. Drivers, teachers, speakers, committee members, board members – they’re all working together to bring joy to the community.

As Thanksgiving marks the unofficial start of a holiday season “filled with joy” (there’s that word again), and Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday follow on its heels, here are two fool-proof options to help you feel joyful:

  • Make a donation to TSCOR. Your support spreads the joy of TSCOR’s programs and services.
  • Shopping? If it feels like a chore, add a little joy! Shop AmazonSmile and select The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond as your charity of choice. Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase to TSCOR at no cost to you.

Another joy-bringing option? Become a volunteer. Because knowing how to choose joy year-round is really something to be thankful for.

Here’s wishing you a joy-filled Thanksgiving and a wonderful holiday season.

Volunteer Opportunity!

Do you like to travel far and wide (and locally!) to see new things and learn about this big, big world of ours? Then you’re in luck because TSCOR has volunteer opportunities available with our Travel committee. We are in search of a committee chair and additional committee members to create and plan trips. We’ve traveled out of state, in state, and around RVA; museums, restaurants, theaters, parks – we love them all. Come on board and put TSCOR on the map.

Not a big traveler yourself but know someone who is? Spread the word!

The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond Receives Award

On Thursday, October 6, 2022, Senior Connections concluded their annual Empty Plate Campaign and held the accompanying luncheon, where The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond was given the Eva Teig Hardy Award for Business Service. This award recognizes the impact of an individual, business, or organization in providing services that help improve the wellbeing of older adults. The nomination for this award was made by Ms. Dorothy Manuel; she has been a beloved transportation client of TSCOR’s since 2009.

Following remarks made by Stephanie Churchill, TSCOR board president, Bernie Henderson, TSCOR past-president, presented the award to Julie Adams-Buchanan, TSCOR executive director. Also in attendance were several TSCOR board and committee members, family members of Ms. Adams-Buchanan, and Ms. Manuel – who was thoroughly delighted to have made this happen!

Many thanks to Senior Connections for this wonderful luncheon and award. TSCOR is honored to be recognized by the community as we uphold our mission to keep older adults active, independent and engaged.
