National Volunteer Week – Friday

“What a great feeling it is to know that I have helped someone in need. I feel happy, fulfilled, even energized.” – Miles

“Volunteering is a great way to make my week a little better.” – Ken

“I love volunteering. The people I drive are so lovely and they appreciate me so much that I just want to do more for each of them.” – Ginny

“When I retired I knew I wanted to give back by being of service to others. Meeting new folks and making new friends is all part of the reward I get from volunteering.”  – Manny

Today concludes our celebration of National Volunteer Week and we’ve saved the best for last. Today’s quotes come from none other than the volunteers of The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR).

Each and every volunteer plays a huge role in making TSCOR the living, breathing, organization it is. We’d like to recognize all of you individually. The best way we can do that here is to share with you the TSCOR Annual Report (2021-2022). Volunteers are listed on pages 11 and 12. Everyone of you deserves your name up in lights! Thank you!

National Volunteer Week – Thursday

“For our own success to be real, it must contribute to the success of others.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

It’s day four of National Volunteer Week. So far we’ve heard from smart people with a lot of lived experience and good words about volunteering summed up into bite-sized inspirations.

And the above quote from Eleanor Roosevelt is no different. It can easily be applied to The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR). Because without our volunteers, The Shepherd’s Center would NOT be successful and we would NOT be contributing to the success of others. It’s that simple – and that real.

Thank you, TSCOR volunteers!

National Volunteer Week – Wednesday

“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Not every volunteer of The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR) holds an advanced degree, though some definitely know how to make the subject and verb agree (you know who you are!). And we wouldn’t be at all surprised if more than a few actually know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics. But we do know for certain that ALL of our volunteers are great because they serve. ALL of our volunteers have a heart full of grace. And they are ALL souls generated by love.

Thank you for serving, TSCOR volunteers!

National Volunteer Week – Tuesday

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” – Arthur Ashe

Today is day two of National Volunteer Week and our quote comes from one of Richmond’s very own – Arthur Ashe. And while we can’t claim the honor of having had Mr. Ashe as a volunteer for The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR), we can use his example of service in the name of causes you believe in as the yard stick to which we measure our volunteers by.

TSCOR’s business model is unique from other nonprofits. We are made by, for and about older adults. If there is a service we want to provide, we start it. If there is a program we want to offer, we create and have it. Our volunteers really DO what they can. And they do it well. Thank you, Shepherd’s Center volunteers! Thank you so much. You really do measure up.

National Volunteer Week – Monday

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss

Today, Monday, April 17, marks the start of National Volunteer Week. Which means if you volunteer for The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR), you’re about to get a whole week of appreciation!

What would TSCOR be without its volunteers? Imagine no Open University or Lunch & Life programs (thank you volunteer teachers, lunch speakers, front desk and hospitality attendees, tech aides, Zoom TA’s, and members of the education committee). Know that every single client we serve would have difficulty finding rides to their doctor’s appointments or getting groceries (thank you volunteer drivers and members of the client services committee). There would be no men’s groups or women’s groups gathering for support and networking; no travelers traveling, no friendly callers calling, no handypersons fixing. No speakers bureau, no public relations, no diversity and inclusion; no development or investment or finance committees. No Board of Directors, too? No, none of them either. So what would TSCOR be without its volunteers? A whole lot of nothing – a nonprofit to fear.

But thanks to our volunteers – people who care a whole awful lot – we are something, we’re TSCOR! We’re getting better! We’re not going to stop!
