Jack & Jacques: A Celebration of the Life of Dr. John D. “Jack” Welsh

Come and celebrate the life of our wonderful friend, Jack, and honor a life well lived.  The production will be selections from Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, produced by Bruce Miller and Phil Whiteway.  Performances will be at 7:00 pm on December 3rd & 4th at VA Rep’s Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn (1601 Willow Lawn Dr., 23230).

Anyone who would like to attend can contact Hannah Miller at VA Rep by email (hmiller@virginiarep.org) or by phone (804-783-1688 ex. 1123), and she’ll reserve you a space.

There will also be an additional performance at Westminster Canterbury on December 5th.  If you prefer to see it there, you will have to make arrangements with Westminster Canterbury or get a resident to get you tickets.

We hope you can join us!

Feldenkrais??

This is an outstanding article on the Feldenkrais method.  Some of you may be wondering what I am talking about.  In fact, you may be like the TSCOR member who forwarded me this article that his wife had emailed to him – he thought it was a German dish.

Click here to read the NY Times article and find out more about this movement technique, AND THEN come check out our Feldenkrais class at the OU.  It is offered Thursdays at 1:30 at First Presbyterian Church.  We have 2 more Thursdays this Fall session and will be starting up again in the Winter session on January 17, 2018.  Hope you will give it a try!

News Channel 8 OU Story

A big shout out to WRIC Channel 8 News and Amy Lacey for telling Richmond about the Open University and The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond.  To watch the broadcast again, CLICK HERE

And thank you to George Pangburn, his geography class, Susie Wiltshire, her French class, especially students, Willis O’Brien and Cathy Hayden, who agreed to be interviewed, as well as our incredible Shirley Norman-Regal, an inspiration to us all!

Take a look at our full course schedule and come join us.  You don’t know what you’re missing!

TSCOR Men’s and Women’s Groups

Did you know that TSCOR has both a Men’s and a Women’s Group? Well, we do! They both began just this past year and now have regular meeting times.

Our Men’s Group meets on the third Wednesday at a little lunch place called “Shore Dog” in the West End (435 N Ridge Road). Anyone interested in attending, respond by email to Jim Evans, jameslevans@yahoo.com.

Our Women’s Group meets on the second Thursday of the month at First Presbyterian Church (4602 Cary Street Road) in Room 218. There will also be “outings” scheduled in between regular meetings.  The group had lunch a couple of Fridays ago in Lakeside and will be discussing the possibility of another outing at the next meeting.  And speaking of the next meeting, it is tomorrow, October 12, where there will be a presentation by one of the members on Genealogy.  Come join us or email Julie, jadams@tscor.org.

We hope everyone interested will come give it a try!

Yoga Class

We are sorry to announce that we were unsuccessful in finding another instructor for our Yoga class scheduled to meet at 11 am on Thursdays at First Presbyterian Church.  We will continue to search and hopefully will find an instructor for the winter session.  If you have any suggestions, please let us know.  Again, so sorry and thank you for your understanding.

For Your Information

Hello Everyone!

I attended the Shepherd’s Center National Regional meeting yesterday in Northern Virginia.  Did you know that we were a part of a national network of Shepherd’s Centers?  I have realized that this is something we need to talk about more!  We are one of 56 Shepherd’s Centers in the United States.  Yesterday, the Centers in Virginia and West Virginia made up the attendance.  It was a wonderful time of “answering burning questions,” sharing best practices and offering support.  To find out more about our national network, go to the Shepherd’s Centers of America website. Take care – Julie

Active Aging Week

This week is Active Aging Week and that’s exactly what we do at The Shepherd’s Center – Age Actively!  Why don’t you join us and Check Out the OU!  The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond offers one of the best lifelong learning opportunities in town – Open University (OU).  Attend a day of classes as our guest to discover if the OU is for you!

There are two opportunities this week:

  • Monday, September 25th from 9:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 7757 Chippenham Parkway.
  • Thursday, September 28th from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road.

Click HERE to see the fall schedule. We look forward to seeing you at the OU!

Pssst! – Already a student?  This would be a great opportunity for you to bring a friend or neighbor with you (big grin) – Julie

A Tiny OU Schedule Change

The Shepherd’s Center looks forward to welcoming to St. Luke on Monday, the 27th, Professor Evie Terrono, professor of art history at Randolph-Macon College.  Her very timely topic is “Mansions and Monuments and Southern Identity in Richmond.”

Because of a conflict beyond her control, Prof. Terrono will begin her talk at 12:45, instead of our accustomed 12:30.  That’s a little extra time to learn more about the Shepherd’s Center and to get to know one another (and maybe even have a second piece of cake!)  See you then.  Bring a friend!
