News & Updates

Lunch and Life Cancelled Wednesday

Due to the impending snow, it is with much sadness that we announce that there will be no Lunch and Life program at St. Mary Catholic Church tomorrow, Wednesday, January 17th.  Forecasters say that it will start snowing overnight and continue for most of the day: “Richmond could see the snow stop as early as noon, but it may not clear out of the metro area entirely until 5 p.m.” (John Boyer, Richmond.com/weather).

The good news is that Randy and Barbara Fitzgerald will be giving their presentation, “Flights to Fancy” on Thursday, February 1 at First Presbyterian Church (4602 Cary Street Road).  Lunch begins at noon and their talk begins at 12:30 pm.  We hope you can join us then!

Take care and please stay safe – Julie

Open University (OU) Notes

Are you ready for the Winter Session of the OU???  The first day of classes is THIS MONDAY, January 15th and yes, it is Martin Luther King Day, but we will be meeting that day to start eight weeks of learning, sharing, and having a whole lot of fun!  We hope you will join us.

There have been a few changes since the schedule was first posted on the website and hit your mailboxes.  Let me list them here:

  • Beginning French will be offered on Thursdays at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian.  This is an 8-week course offered by Ron Haizlip, who taught this same course this past Fall.
  • The Lunch Speaker on Thursday, January 18, at First Presbyterian, will be Bill Lohmann presenting, “On the Road Again: More People, Places and Pie Around Virginia.”  This replaces August Wallmeyer’s talk on “The Extremes of Virginia.”  We hope to have Mr. Wallmeyer present in the Spring Session.
  • The date of Jeffrey Hill’s lunch presentation was printed incorrectly.  The date that should be there is 3/5 (not 2/26).

Changes are bound to happen, so we encourage you to look at the schedule on the Open University tab on our website for the most up-to-date version.  But since you have subscribed to our website, you can click RIGHT HERE to get the latest, correct schedule for Winter 2018.

We are looking forward to a great session.  Remember to tell your friends – Julie

OU Schedule Changes

Good Day Everyone –

We have a small change in the line-up of Lunch Speakers at First Presbyterian on Thursdays.  On January 18th, the first day of the Winter Session, August Wallmeyer will be unable to present The Extremes of Virginia.  We plan on having him back on the schedule in the near future.

The lunch speaker will now be Bill Lohmann, author and columnist for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, who will present the topic On the Road Again: More People, Places and Pie Around Virginia.  We are pleased he could join us and share his humorous stories of the back roads of Virginia.  Remember, if you are a TSCOR member, lunch speakers are free all year long as a benefit of membership!

Are you a Superager?

What will you be like in your 80s? Living independently, robust in body and mind, with a wide social circle?  Manage that and you will be a “Superager.”  BBC News aired a very interesting story on this subject over the weekend – see it HERE

Another term I saw on an admission sign, when I was in Scotland a few years ago, was “Super Adult.” I love these terms coming from across the pond.  They remind me of the people involved in The Shepherd’s Center.  I am always saying how our volunteers, students and members astound me with how active and engaged they are.  Many could run circles around me!

I hope that you will make a New Year’s resolution to get involved with our organization by attending the Open University (starting January 15), volunteering in a variety of capacities, or supporting us by becoming a member (only $25 a year!). If you are already involved – Yay!  Please help us by telling everyone you know in Richmond about TSCOR and invite them to give us a try.  Your personal endorsements do more than any kind of advertisement – talk us up!  Thank you so much, and here’s to all you “Super Adults” and “Superagers!!”  – Julie

PS – There is a small mistake in the OU Schedule that was emailed to you last week, as well as the one that may be coming to your mailbox soon.  The last lunch speaker on Mondays at St. Luke’s, Jeffrey Hill, speaking on the Huguenot Bridge, will be on 3/5 (not 2/26 as listed).  This has been corrected on all online links.
