TSCOR Women’s Group

We have started a women’s group and we would love for you to be a part of it!  The group will be freeform, with no one leader, and will come up with a short list of topics to assign to each meeting.  During the meeting, everyone will have a chance to share what she thinks about the subject and then there will be a group discussion.  Meeting frequency is undecided, but there is another planning meeting scheduled where that, and other particulars, will be discussed.  Hope you can join us!  Please let Julie know if you are interested at jadams@TSCOR.org or 804-355-7282.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, August 16 at 2:30 pmvintage woman with sheep

Location: The Shepherd’s Center Office, 3111 Northside Ave., Suite 400, Richmond 23228

Annual Membership Drive

Dear Friends of TSCOR,

It’s time once again for the Annual Membership drive of The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond.  Please become a member or renew your membership today.

Last year, TSCOR taught over 300 students at The Open University, traveled to Montpelier, VA and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens with Group Travel and provided over 1,400 free rides to seniors, offered by volunteers, through our Transportation Program.

In the coming year, we envision strengthening the Open University program, expanding Group Travel, increasing our team of drivers and maximizing volunteer involvement throughout the organization.

Your membership makes you an integral part of the vital and caring community of individuals who do so much to improve the lives of older people in Richmond and surrounding counties.

Benefits of a TSCOR Membership:

  • Free attendance to all Open University Lunch Speakers
  • Reduced Open University tuition
  • Reduced TSCOR Group Travel rates
  • Invitation to the Annual Volunteer Celebration
  • The knowledge that you are contributing to the betterment of your community
  • Supporting our mission to encourage older adults to remain active and independent through enrichment programs and volunteer service to their peers

Our annual membership cycle runs July 1 through June 30, concurrent with our fiscal year.  The $25 membership may be paid anytime beginning July 1st. Please note that joining later in the annual cycle does not allow for reduced or pro-rated dues.  Membership can be mailed to our office, submitted with your Open University registration, or select the second link below to pay online with your credit card.

For membership form and to pay by cash or check, click here.

If you would like to pay with your credit card, please click here.

Thank you for being a member of The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond!   We can’t do it without ewe!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Yes, it is only July, but July 1st marks the beginning of a new fiscal year for TSCOR.

July 1st also kicks off a new membership cycle for TSCOR.  Keep a lookout for the Annual Membership renewal notice coming to one of your mailboxes right after July 4th (email or snail mail, or you can always find it on our website).  Please check your email spam or junk mail folder to be sure we didn’t end up there.  If so, please mark us as “not spam.”

Membership is only $25 for the entire year (July 1 – June 30) but it means a great deal to our organization.  Membership can be mailed to our office or submitted with your Open University registration.  And now, for the first time, you will be able to pay online with your credit card.  There is a link on our website homepage that will take you to a secure site (GoEMerchant) where you can pay membership.

Your financial support and participation means everything to us.  Remember to tell your friends and neighbors about us too – your recommendation is worth so much more than any kind of advertisement.  Thank you so much and here’s to another wonderful year to come!!  Enjoy your summer – Julie

Almost a new year for TSCOR

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I was looking through some files for something entirely different from what I found and I thought it would be fun to share it with you.  We are about to start our 34th year of service to the older population of Richmond on July 1st and it is great to look back at our 30th, when the article below was written by our pal, Bill Lohmann.   Enjoy the article and remember, our volunteers, members, students and clients are why we are still here!

Happy Summer!!

TSCOR Women’s Group Update

We had the initial planning meeting of the women’s group on May 17 where it was pointed out that this group could be anything that its members wanted it to be. That is an exciting prospect, don’t you think?

The attendees decided that this group would be freeform, with no one leader and could evolve over time. A few guidelines were established.  To begin, the group will come up with a short list of topics to assign to each meeting.  At the meeting, everyone will have a bit of time to share what she thinks about the subject and then there will be group discussion. Meeting frequency is undecided, but there is another planning meeting scheduled where that, and other particulars, will be discussed.  Hope you can join us!  Please let Julie know if you are interested at jadams@TSCOR.org or 804-355-7282.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, August 16 at 2:30 pm

Location: The Shepherd’s Center Office, 3111 Northside Ave., Suite 400, Richmond, 23228

Two Timely Topics at the OU

Don’t miss Dr. George Munro’s lunch talk on “Vladimir Putin:  World’s Most Powerful Leader?” on Thursday, May 18, at our Open University site at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road.  Dr. Munro is an award-winning professor of history at V.C. U. and travels frequently to Russia for research.

Then on Monday, May 22, at St. Luke Lutheran, 7757 Chippenham Parkway, Dr. Dan Palazzolo, award-winning professor of political science at the University of Richmond, will discuss “Governing in the New Congress.

Both talks begin at 12:30 and will last about 45 minutes, including Q & A.  Come earlier at noon with a sandwich, if you like.  Coffee, tea, and cake are available for purchase.  Bring your friends for these important lunchtime talks.

What a Celebration It Was!

This past Tuesday, we gathered together and honored our volunteers and their service to Richmond’s older community.  Enjoy the pictures (thank you Susan B.!).  If you click on them, they will get larger.  Thank you again to all of our volunteers, who are drivers, transportation coordinators, handy men & women, friendly callers, Open University instructors and support crew,  board and committee members.

You ARE The Shepherd’s Center!

And you thought we forgot….

Happy National Volunteer Week!!!!

In fact, we would not exist without our volunteers!

Many, many thanks to ALL of you for making us the great organization we are and for helping us to create a more caring community for older adults here in the River City.

We really couldn’t do it without ewe (big grin) – Julie

Date and Speaker Switch at St. Mary

Two of the Shepherd’s Center’s most popular speakers are Bill Lohmann, columnist for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and Ed Slipek, architectural historian and senior contributing editor of Style Weekly .  Because of a family emergency on Wednesday, March 29th, Lohmann will be unable to speak on his assigned date.  Ed Slipek, who was scheduled for April 5th at St, Mary, has agreed to switch his date with that of Bill Lohmann.  We are pleased that we will keep both men on the schedule, although in a different order!  Here, then, is the new schedule:

Wednesday, March 29:  Ed Slipek on “Richmond Architectural Gems”

Wednesday, April 5:  Bill Lohmann on “On the Road Again:  More People, Places and Pie Around Virginia”.  Lohmann will bring copies of his books to sell and to sign.

The other two great speakers in the Lunch and Life series:  Curtis Monk, president and CEO of Commonwealth Public Broadcasting, and Craig Reynolds, director of the Branch Museum of Architecture and Design, keep their original dates of April 12 and April 26, respectively.

All the excitement takes place at St. Mary Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road.  Bring a bag lunch at noon.  The church will provide beverages and desserts  The talks begin at 12:30.

PS – Spring Session begins TODAY!  Hope to see everyone – Julie

Informal Men’s Group Update

Jim Evans, TSCOR member, has indeed successfully started an informal men’s group that has already met a couple of times.  Just older guys who want to have a chance to get together with some other older guys, no agenda in particular, just a discussion group, maybe once a month, time and place TBD.  It would be a chance to compare notes, opinions, and life experiences.  If anyone is interested in joining these meetings, contact Jim Evans at 754-7765.

And with that being said, are there any women out there that would be interested in starting an informal women’s group??  We need a couple of volunteers to coordinate meetings and TSCOR can help with the time and location.  Email me at jadams@TSCOR.org with your thoughts.  Thanks so much – Julie
